INEC announces plan to probe FG’s TraderMoni scheme

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will probe the TraderMoni micro-credit scheme of the Federal Government.  INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this to reporters in Abuja while raising several concerns about vote buying by some politicians. He said the electoral body was aware of the controversy trailing the TraderMoni, stressing that they would investigate the scheme for possible violation of campaign finance laws. Professor Yakubu explained that the commission would study public comments on the scheme and assess whether or not the government violated the campaign finance laws.   According to him, INEC has a mechanism for tracking campaign finance violations by the candidates and various political parties in the country. This comes amid accusations by individuals and groups, including civil society organisations who described the scheme as a form of vote-buying. Unknown gunmen kidnap chief press secretary to Taraba State Governor

Hassan Mijinyawa, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor of Taraba State, Darius Dickson Ishaku has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen. Hassan was reportedly whisked away this morning while on his way to Gembu, along Bali-Gashaka axis of the road, to join the Governor who is on a campaign tour of the area. David Akinremi, Commissioner of Taraba Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that "personnel have been deployed to the area to commence search and rescue of the victims".  Haruna Manu, Deputy Governor of Taraba State, also confirmed the incident to newsmen in Jalingo, the state capital.   Manu said contact had not been established with the abductors, and urged the public to pray for the safe release of Hassan and other victims. Onnoghen: Lawyers shun NBA boycott order, attend to cases at Supreme Court

Lawyers have shunned the boycott order issued by the Nigerian Bar Association on Monday as a way to protest the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter onnoghen.  Cases are presently being heard at the Supreme Court with Justice Mary Peter-Odili presiding. The lawyers had taken a decision to boycott the courts yesterday after staging a protest at the entrance of the Nigerian Bar Association NBA over Onnoghen's suspension.

Nigeria ranks 144 out of 180 on Transparency International’s corruption perception index

Transparency International has just released a new list of countries ranked highest in corruption practices. Nigeria scored 27 over 100, and was ranked 144/180 countries studied. Somalia, a country located at Sub-Saharan Africa was listed as the highest country with the highest corruption report. It scored 10 over 100 and was raked 180 out of 180 countries analyzed. However, Denmark, a country located at Western Europe & European Union scored 88 over 100 and was ranked 1st and the best country with a ‘No’ or little corruption report.   The 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International reveals that the continued failure of most countries to significantly control corruption is contributing to a crisis of democracy around the world. The 2018 CPI draws on 13 surveys and expert assessments to measure public sector corruption in 180 countries and territories, giving each a score from zero (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the United States, United Kingdom and the European Union for releasing various statements, rebuking the Buhari-led government over the suspension of Walter Onnoghen, Chief justice of Nigeria (CJN). Recall that the foreign government over the weekend released various statements condemning the suspension of the Justice Onnoghen. The foreign governments opined that the suspension coming few weeks to the elections, will cast doubts on the credibility in the 2019 election. A statement released by George Ehidiamen Edokpa, the Foreign Affairs Ministry's spokesman said it is unfortunate that the foreign missions would align with the opposition, and their action portends tolerance for corrupt act. IPOB fixes referendum on the same date as presidential election

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra has said  IPOB will hold a referendum on the sovereign state of Biafra on  February 16, a date the Independent National Electoral Commission has set aside for presidential and National Assembly elections. The INEC office at Oyigbo LGA in Rivers state was set ablaze by hoodlums this morning. The culprits are yet to be arrested but police say investigations have commenced and that those behind the act would be apprehended and made to face the wrath of the law. Thankfully no life was lost.  The state residents believe the attack on the INEC office is a ploy by some disgruntled politicians to ensure the elections in the state are postponed. Onnoghen: Nigerian Senate cancels emergency plenary session, drags FG to Supreme court

The Nigerian Senate has called off its planned emergency session it had planned to hold tomorrow January 29th, to consider the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria(CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen. There have been rumors that the emergency session may degenerate into a fight as the APC and PDP senators were allegedly poised for a showdown.  The Clerk to the Senate, Nelson Ayewor in a statement entitled “Cancellation of Senate resumption in plenary” informed “all Distinguished senators of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that the resumption in plenary scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday 29th January, 2019 has been cancelled.” The statement said that the scheduled date of resumption in plenary earlier fixed for Tuesday, 19th February, 2019 remains . The Lagos Marathon will hold on February 2, 2019 and for about 12 hours, some parts of Lagos will be closed to vehicular and human traffic for the safety of thousands of runners, hundreds of thousands of cheering fans and millions of Lagosians. Below are alternative routes that will ease the movement of Lagosians and thousands who would want to join us at the Eko Atlantic finish point. All vehicles from Ikeja and environs headed to Victoria Island MUST go through Ikorodu Road. ·         All vehicles from Badagry, Mile 2 and environs going to Victoria Island MUST go through Apapa and Orile to link the Eko Bridge to Victoria Island. ·         Residents of Lagos Mainland, Surulere and environs MUST avoid Masha Area and National Stadium but can link Victoria Island through Iponri/Iganmu, Eko Bridge then unto Victoria Island. ·         Vehicles coming from Ibadan, Mowe and environs can link Victoria Island through Ojota, Ikorodu Road, Eko Bridge to Victoria Island. ·      

Governor Okorocha removed as APC campaign coordinator in Imo State

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has removed Rochas Okorocha, Governor of Imo State, as the party’s campaign council coordinator in the state.   This comes after the state chapter of the APC had already announced the suspension of the governor a few days ago. However, the APC NWC confirmed the suspension on Sunday saying its decision is based on Okorocha's anti-party activities. Confirming the suspension to Punch newspaper, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the APC National Publicity Secretary, noted that Okorocha could not be part of the party's strategic meetings since he had publicly worked against the party's interest.   Okorocha has vowed to work in the interest of the governorship ambition of his in-law, Uche Nwosu, who is the candidate of the Action Alliance (AA), against Hope Uzodinma of the APC.   Confirming the suspension, Issa-Onilu said : “the APC had directed governors to take over the campaign of the party in

A lady took to Twitter to accuse a popular Twitter slay king of owing her friend money and refusing to pay. Another Twitter user then reached out to the young man in question to get his side of the story. Ginika said Somto Cody Akanegbu and her friend Cindy Nwachukwu were dating and he scammed her during the relationship and has refused to pay back till date. Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said that suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, is the architect of the misfortune that has so far befallen him.
